Great teachers are life-long learners, constantly finding new ways to reach their students. As a Teaching Fellow, you’ll pair your practice in the classroom with subsidized university-based training to become an effective teacher who can make a difference in the lives of your students. Fellows generally complete a master’s degree in education in two to three years, depending on their subject area and university.
Participate in a program customized to your goals
Our partner universities offer programs specifically designed to meet Fellows’ needs and goals. You’ll participate in courses alongside other Fellows, building connections and sharing experiences and resources to support professional growth. Your coursework will prepare you for immediate work in the classroom, laying the theoretical foundations for a successful career in teaching.
Continued support to help you and your students excel
You’ll receive ongoing support from professors and university administrators both inside and outside the lecture hall. University staff will observe your classroom throughout the year, providing one-on-one feedback to strengthen your teaching practice.
Subsidized costs to make your education work for you
The NYC Department of Education subsidizes most of the cost of tuition (excluding books and materials) for your master’s degree. The remaining balance for tuition is deducted from the Fellow’s regular paycheck once they begin teaching. For the 2017 Summer Program, Fellows' estimated tuition costs were $9,000 for the Bronx Cohort and $11,500 for the Citywide Cohort. Tuition contribution for the 2018 Summer Program will be similar.
While the master’s degree program is subsidized, some Fellows may be required to take additional coursework to satisfy New York State teacher certification regulations, including liberal arts credits (also known as “the general education core”) or subject-specific program prerequisite coursework for subjects like math or science. Any cost associated with additional coursework is the responsibility of the Fellow.
More details about specific certification requirements are available on the New York State Certification website.
Prior to enrollment at one of our partner universities, all Fellows will be required to take the GRE General Test. The deadline to test for the 2018 Summer Program is May 1, 2018.
