In our effort to raise student achievement for all New York City students—regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or ability—we know that teachers matter immensely. Teachers help to determine whether a student receives a diploma on graduation day, whether a student aims to go to college. Too often, our highest need schools have difficulty attracting enough teachers for their classrooms, especially in critical shortage areas such as special education and science. NYC Teaching Fellows are changing this reality.

Why Teachers Matter in NYC
In New York City, almost 4 in 10 New York City public school students do not earn a diploma within four years, and black, Latino, and low-income students in New York City score, on average, several grade levels below their peers on standardized tests. We know that when students in high-poverty areas have equal access to the resources available to their more affluent peers they are able to achieve at high levels, and we know that effective teachers are the most influential factor in determining student success. Fellows are committed to ensuring that all students in New York City receive an excellent education—and they are making a dramatic difference. Learn more about why teachers matter in New York City.
In the last ten years, the NYC Teaching Fellows program has provided New York City public schools with over 16,000 new teachers. The NYC Teaching Fellows program has grown into the country’s largest, most selective program of its kind, alleviating chronic teacher shortages in New York City in critical high-need subject areas such as mathematics, special education, science, bilingual education, and English.
