We train with a clear purpose, focusing on what matters most: developing the skills new teachers need to help students learn and grow. Each great teacher is unique, but all do certain basic things well. Our training hones those essentials, starting with the core skills all teachers need to lead a classroom on day one—and for years to come.
Whether you’re an athlete, surgeon, lawyer, or educator, practice is the key to continuous improvement. Our training centers around this concept, giving you the opportunity to learn new skills and practice them in NYC classrooms the very next day.
Throughout pre-service training, you will work one-on-one with skilled coaches to get the feedback you need to improve quickly. All coaches are experienced NYC educators, eager to help you develop the skills you need to make a difference for students.
You’ll join a strong community of Fellows, experienced NYC teachers, and trained NYCTF staff, all committed to helping you grow. You will support, challenge, and celebrate one another, forming bonds that will last for years to come.
Our training sets a high bar because we know that teacher quality is the most important factor in raising student achievement. Only Fellows with clear potential to be successful new teachers will earn the privilege of entering the classroom at the end of pre-service training. By holding a high bar and helping you meet it, we ensure that the students of New York City get the great teachers they need and deserve.
Summer and Fall Programs
Pre-service training takes place twice each year: once in the summer and again in the fall. Fellows in our Summer Program begin in mid-June, training for 7-8 weeks at a Training Academy hosted by an NYC summer school. Fellows in our Fall Program begin in late August, training through November in the classroom of an experienced NYCTF coach. Most Fellows also begin university coursework during pre-service training, attending classes in the afternoon.
NYC Teaching Fellows Bronx Cohort
Many of NYC’s highest-need schools are in the Bronx. We believe students in the Bronx deserve well-resourced schools, qualified teachers, and an education that propels them to success. To accomplish that, we’re recruiting Fellows committed to giving Bronx students the support they need to achieve their goals.
By committing to teach in the Bronx, Fellows enjoy the following benefits:
- Early Hiring: To meet the high need for teachers, Bronx Cohort Fellows will be able to meet with principals before citywide hiring officially begins. Bronx Cohort Fellows will have the opportunity to secure an early hiring commitment from a select group of schools in the Bronx.
- Reduced Tuition: While all Fellows receive a subsidized tuition through the NYC Teaching Fellows program, Bronx Cohort university tuition in pursuit of a master's degree is further subsidized.
- Networking and Support: Bronx Cohort Fellows will be invited to special school tours, networking events, and hiring events to connect with Bronx principals and hiring representatives.
- Opportunity for Awards: Eligible Bronx Cohort Fellows may be able to take advantage of award programs like Americorps.
