Subject Areas
Subject Area Eligibility
Fellows are prepared to teach where they are needed most. Subject areas offered through the NYC Teaching Fellows change each year, and over the course of the application season, based on the anticipated hiring needs of our schools.
Rather than applying to teach a specific subject/certification area, you will be asked to provide information regarding your subject area preferences as you complete your application. Applicants to the NYC Teaching Fellows will be screened for subject area eligibility and assigned a subject area based upon their eligibility and preferences, as well as the anticipated hiring needs of NYC public schools.
Subject Eligibility Requirements
The key determinants of your subject area placement are: completion of required prior coursework per New York State regulations; availability and need within your subject area at the time of your offer, and your subject area preference.
For these reasons, if there is a particular subject you would prefer to teach, we recommend that you apply early and check our Subject Area Requirements to determine whether you meet the required coursework as designated by New York State.
Subject areas are provisionally assigned to all candidates who pass our application process; assignments may change based on availability within particular subject areas as well as university requirements. Ultimately our university partners will make a final subject area determination on all candidates based on their ability to meet the New York State coursework requirements.
